How We Began..and What We Do..

In 1993, Muskoka had 50,000 people and 10 courses. When we looked at the demographics of Muskoka, we could see a demand for 12 courses at the most - with growth for the next 10 years taken into account. So we, the MacKay family,Don, Joyce, Andrew Scott and Russell, committed to building a 9 hole course.

The first nine holes of Muskoka Highlands came about in 1993, shaping a dairy farm into 9 very interesting holes with leading edge greens and tees and a feel reminiscent of Scotland - where golf began (sorry Augusta - golf is meant to be played with Nature as your partner). Right from the start, we have remained committed to working with Mother Nature, and not against her, to deliver some of the best playing conditions in Muskoka. An additional nine holes were added in 2000 - you really cannot tell the difference between the older and the newer.. On our 17th tee you'll find a memorial stone dedicated to Mrs. Dinner, who was the first white child born in Monck Township when the area was originally being homesteaded.

We gradually add new features each year - a new tee on 8, pot bunkers on 3 holes, and a new tee deck on 11 during 2010. All the while trying to improve features like cart paths.

We do stay consistent in one key area - our staff. We are pleased that our serving staff will be back for 2012 - and we will replace those that are furthering their careers with new and energetic people who love to work with you.

Junior program and Junior golfers are of special importance to the MacKay Family and they are committed to hosting and welcoming the Bay Area Golfer Junior Tour and the Canadian Junior Golfer Association tournaments.

The course has grown up - and so have the sons - Andrew is now the Assistant CPGA Professional at Westmount in Kitchener and working towards his Chartered Accountant designation with BDO in Waterloo, Scott is the General Manger at Wildwinds in Guelph in the summer months and a salesman for Ideal brakepads in the winter months, and Russell is finishing his last year at the University of Waterloo, actively pursuing a career in Sport Event Management.
