What People Are Saying About Muskoka Highlands Golf Links

We couldn't have said it better ourselves!
While we don't let the accolades go to our head, we don't mind sharing a few thoughts with you!

"Don,

I do agree 100% that you need to play on a golf course suited to your ability in order to maximize the fun aspect of the game. I now know that when I golf at the Highlands I do have more fun because I feel that at every hole I have a chance to maybe make par and that makes the day a lot more fun. If I want to challenge myself I sometimes take on the back teesto allow me to use different clubs, but at your course I find it manageable which allows me to still enjoy myself. The friendly atmosphere becomes more evident after playing at larger and more expensive golf courses.

The highlands is definitely golfer friendly, especially for those us who are looking for a fun and friendly day at the golf course.

"I could not said it better ,I find its not how well you play that makes the day enjoyable it's the atmosphere of the course, the friendliness of the players and the fact that while playing at a new  course of which is new too you only the regulars accept you as a welcome visitor and you do not get the feeling from the locals of (What are you doing on our course? As if it were their private domain. Although I have been recovering from the "BIG C" WHICH TOOK A LOT OF MY ENERGY over the last 3 years I have not played as often as I liked or roamed too far from my home course. As the energy levels return I hope to venture to other course's and hopefully we can manage a trip to the muskoka highlands early in the new year. Thank you for keeping this course in our big picture and thank you again for maintaining such a beautiful course."

"I agree that Muskoka Highlands is an ideal course for me, being a super-senior. I enjoy the layout and its less than 6000 yard length. I have noticed too the general good feeling there is about the place, from the announcement by the highway in the winter, as to how many days till golf, to the friendly atmosphere of the clubhouse. I also enjoy reading your observations about golf and life, in the newsletter.

I only wish I had more opportunities to play at your fine course, and I am disappointed to realize that its October and I have only managed to play there a couple of times, again this year.

We live in Toronto and visit our cherished Touchstone resort each month, passing by Muskoka Highlands on our way. The course always looks inviting and I yearn to play there. However a family weekend in Muskoka leaves little time for golf, with so many other activities available in such a short time. It seems the only way to get to play there is to drive up from Toronto just for the golf, which is what I did last time, and alas, probably next time too.

So thanks for the enthusiasm about golf, family and your Golf Course, which I enjoy often when I receive your notes.

Keep up the great work! I will get there again at the soonest opportunity."

"Hi Don,

After reading your last newsletter where you talked about letting people
golf with their dogs, I decided to give it a try. Don, you wouldn't know me
by name but you did meet my beautiful, sweet little border collie a few
weeks ago when we were sitting in a golf cart watching my 4 year old, Harry,
taking golf lessons.

I went out around six in the evening and just played nine, as I wanted to
see how "Jinx" would be on the course and didn't want to experiment when too
many golfers were out. It happened to be a most beautiful evening and I have
to say it was one of my most enjoyable golf experiences ever. The dog loved
it and looked most natural out there. Well, she is of Scottish heritage,
after all!

When I'd go to hit the ball, I'd say "Tee Up" and point to were I wanted her
with the end of my club. By the end of the round I only had to say it and
she was happy to comply. That's a border collie for you. Next time I take
her I'm going to soak my golf balls in bacon fat first so she can sniff them
out in the ruff.

Thanks very much,"

"Alison and I just returned from a wonderful golfing holiday in Scotland. We
saw the Open at St. Andrews and the Senior Open at Carnoustie, my favourite
golf course. We also played several rounds at some great courses, a few of
which I know you're familiar with such as Crail Balcomie, Crail Craighead,
Lundin Links and Scotscraig.
Scotscraig is an Open qualifier and the course reminded us of Muskoka
Highlands.
You, Nick, and Darrick and everyone associated with the Highlands should be
proud of the work you've done to the golf course. It matches very favourably
with some of the best links style courses in Scotland."

"Hi Don – FYI, I'm very impressed with your ‘on-going / constant' contact emails – topical, current, relevant, well written, targeted etc., etc. – trust / hope it's helping in your highly competitive market!! "I just wanted to say that I always enjoy your notices and got a particular chuckle from the message from Scotland last month. We only managed to get down to you once so far this year and that is regrettable. The Highlands is one of the most challenging and wonderful courses available to us in Muskoka and I know our group will endeavour to play the course on a more regular basis in the future. Hope you and your family have a enjoyable Thanksgiving. Cheers."

"Really cool that they let you test drivers for $5 per round. I took the Titleist 905R and bought one the day. I hit my tee shot over the dogleg, 30 yards short of the first green. My playing partners were kinda dumbfounded... "

"A good links-style course. Not overly long but greens and fairways have always been in great shape... good shot values due to trapping, water hazards... "

"With its ever-present Muskoka breeze, the Highlands challenges every player and is a wonderful layout for the beginner. The layout will lull you into thinking it is straight-forward but it has all of the shot-making challenges of a true Scottish links course — without salt in your eyes from the crashing seas!"

"The few sand bunkers are strategically located to gobble an errant shot, while providing a target for that hopeful low round."

"Muskoka Highlands is the home of Muskoka's only Hi Definition Golf Simulator. This is where you can play golf all year long. From a practice green, to a driving range or a selection of 12 courses from across North America including Pinehurst #2, Pebble Beach or Wooden Sticks."

"In my opinion your Gold Membership is very good value for the money. May I suggest that you consider a special golf cap which identifies Gold Membership at the course. When wearing the cap staff will know who we are which in turn would give them an edge in helping us. This in turn might make other players/members consider that Gold Membership is worthwhile. Think in terms of American Express: Head Of The Line. As you know symbols are very powerful!! Powerful enough that people are more than willing to pay for this.

To make my point: The other day when Wilma & I came off the course one of the staff (and I don't know his name) knew we were members and carried Wilma's clubs to the car. He did not need to do this - but he did. He was so fast I didn't have time to tip him but we were very impressed and very thankful."

"This is why I love Muskoka Highlands Golf Links... It was the first time, and probably the last time, I beat my husband straight up in the game of golf. Even my husband while licking his wounds had to grudgingly admit that it was a fun and enjoyable golf course. Other than the thrill of victory, the varied terrain, the fair yet unique holes and the country atmosphere made me want to transport it back to Calgary so I could play it often.
P.S. Breaking 85 is always sweet!"

"Many visitors to the area often complain that a golf outing in Muskoka is out of their budget now that all the high-end tracks have opened. But there remain more than a few solid options for those shopping at a lower price point. Muskoka Highlands near Bracebrige is a good place to start. With a top green fee of $60 and a homey feel about the place, owner Donald Mackay has done well to create a decent golf course completely free of pretense and based on that the game was supposed to be about: fun. While you're there be sure to inquire about Muskoka Highlands' lineup of Labradors. The guide dogs in training are as big of a staple around the course as the friendly and inviting atmosphere."

 "Don,

Thanks for this. Bang on, I think.

I read the Canadian Golf Association Press Release on this and it provides further detail. This whole issue applies to the email you sent out a while ago asking for the "snow board" solution to golf.

Looking at the CPGA tee block suggestions, it includes those who are lighter hitters:

150 yards 3,500 - 3,700 yards

125 yards 2,800 - 3,000 yards

100 yards 2,100 - 2,300 yards

It is great that you offer tee blocks that play at 3700 at Muskoka Highlands - just about right for your 150 yarders. But not many courses offer this option - Wildwinds (a course you know well), for example, has it's shortest course length at 4618. I play with a very good senior woman who typically hits every fairway and goes out between 130 and 150. That is a pretty top level for the gender and age category. She has a good mid and short game, too. But, she has difficulty hitting most greens in regulation at that course. What about those who hit between 100 and 125? They are clearly playing for double bogey or more on each hole.

So, with an ageing population, should we not be seeing courses add more tee blocks in the really forward positions? Those that do might find they attract a crowd of short hitters who want to try to make a few pars or those magical birdies. Nothing like that to keep them coming back.

I played in a scramble tournament yesterday and, because I am over 60, I played from 5100 yards, unlike the younger fellows in my group, who played from 5900. I normally play the white tees at most courses, so usually from about 5300 to 5400. What a difference a couple of hundred yards can make. I really contributed to me team, often hitting it to within a wedge of the green (just like Phil). Lots of high-fives. Now that was a fun day and did not feel the least bit embarrassed about taking advantage of my ageing-body category.

Seems to me that , as well as adding more tee options, courses need to be extremely proactive in getting players to select the right tee. Sometimes on the scorecard we see suggested tees by handicap. But most players do not read that before they tee off and many do not have a handicap or understand that system. So publishing the CPGA-suggested tee blocks based on average driving distance and letting players know where they should be hitting from is a must. Maybe this should be displayed in the proshop in a very visible spot. It might help also to give a little more detail on what is meant by average driving distance, as I suspect that many would overestimate this.

Just a thought.
